1. Conduct an Immediate Exterior Inspection
Before stepping inside, walk around the outside of your house to check for obvious hazards: tilted or leaning walls, visible separation between walls and foundation, cracked chimneys, or sagging rooflines. 3. Evaluate Interior Structural Damage
Carefully enter with a flashlight (avoid open flames or lighters). Look for deep X-shaped diagonal cracks in drywall, shear walls, or masonry, as well as wide gaps where walls meet ceilings or floors. Check if doors and windows jam tightly or fail to close, which indicates structural shifting. Check water lines and drain pipes for leaks before using fixtures.
4. Know When to Request Professional Inspection
Minor cosmetic hairline cracks in paint or plaster are common after minor shaking. However, wide structural cracks (greater than 1/4 inch / 6mm), bulging exterior walls, shifted chimneys, or cracked load-bearing columns require immediate inspection by a licensed structural engineer or local building inspector before permanent re-occupancy.
